In July, I was nominated for Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce. The award is designed to recognize a local business person under the age of thirty five that owns, or runs and business in Kamloops that goes above and beyond the norm for their customers. The Young Entrepreneur of the Year award is always a very competitive category and this year there were over twenty nominees.
When I found out I was nominated I was honoured to be considered for the award. I also chuckled to myself a little bit because when I was attending the University of Waterloo for my undergraduate science degree and then for my doctorate of optometry I hadn’t attended a single business course! It was only after I finished my post-secondary education and began working as an optometrist that I found out how much of a businessman I truly was. Apart from my roles as the doctor I have employees to manage, pay cheques to write and bills to pay. Luckily, I had a lot of help from my father who helped me avoid several stumbling blocks along the way.
After I was nominated came the difficult part, I had to submit a paper answering specific questions about my entrepreneurial spirit and about Ebata Eyecare. After many edits and revisions I submitted my responses and had to wait to hear if I was chosen as a finalist. The finalist announcement ceremony was at local Kamloops business just after the Labour Day holiday. And to my surprise of the twenty three nominees I was chosen as one of four finalists. Three other nominees and myself will have a formal interview with a panel of judges whom will decide who is the Entrepreneur of the Year.
The award winner is announced at the annual Chamber of Commerce Gala on October 27th. Wish me luck everyone!
