It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post – but I wanted to share this incredible story with you. In 2016, I performed an eye examination on a patient that was experiencing problems with depth perception, dizziness and had difficulty tracking moving objects with his eyes. I felt that it was not his eyes that were the problem, but potentially something neurological. I sent a letter to the patient’s family doctor to have him immediately referred to a neurologist.
Fast forward to 2017 and the same patient comes in for his regular eye examination. It turns out that he in fact did have a serious neurological condition that was putting pressure on his brainstem and that was causing all of his symptoms. He had two major brain surgeries with one of the top neurosurgeons at Vancouver General Hospital. Both surgeries were successful and he is his well on his way to returning to the activities that he was unable to do before his diagnosis.
This story just goes to show you how an examination of the eyes can reveal problems with other parts of the body and the importance of having your eyes examined on a regular basis. I can’t emphasize this enough. This patient was very fortunate and due to the excellent care he received, he did not suffer any debilitations and can look forward to a long and happy life.
We truly believe in our motto of “helping people live better lives through better vision” and this story is a great example of the level of patient care we strive for. It gives me great pride in the work that my team and I perform each and every day.
